In Maya mythology, Camazotz—or Zotz—was the bat deity, depicted as a human figure with the head and wings of a bat. Associated with night, darkness, wisdom and the path into the underworld, Zotz was also connected with healing and was invoked by priests seeking relief from illness.
Guardian of the caves

For the Maya, caves were not simply openings in the ground. They were entrances to the underworld: sacred spaces where the earthly world met the divine and subterranean water moved like the blood of the earth. Within these caves, bats—the Zotz—were guardians of the threshold.
